VNC – remote operation technology: to control, to view and to change data on Segnetics controllers

Nowadays in the 21st century, at home and at work we use technologies that do not demand human or equipment physical presence. In field of plc operation, different technologies were worked out, too. However, the most of them have one major shortcoming – that is one-way operation, when you remotely can launch a program or change settings in a controller, but you cannot view what the controller shows on its monitor.

Therefore, to operate a controller completely, we recommend VNC technology. By using VNC, one can fully operate Segnetics plc on Linux: Matrix, TRIM5, SMH4.

How does VNC work? You launch a special program on a plc and one more on a device that will operate this plc. The device can be a PC, a tablet PC or a smartphone, but further let us call it PC. The PC informs the PLC about keypresses. The PLC informs the PC what it shows on its monitor: the picture, the menu, figures – everything. It’s a convenient operation because you operate a PLC remotely as if the plc is in your hands.

People operate in dangerous conditions: at the facility with heavy machines, with high stress levels, at oil platform, etc. Workers can operate in a distance and provide themselves add-on security.	It is necessary to reach a plc right now or a plc is hard-to-reach. A maintenance service can connect to a controller to see files, to regulate index and so on. A user can change setting to switch on heating at country home in advance.
Several controllers that are in different places, even they are in thousand kilometers, are operated and are monitored. It can be on a factory in different workshops or some boiler houses in separate addresses. Now we have an opportunity to use one operator panel to control different PLCs. Thanks to VNC there is no need to visit large areas of industrial facilities.	We can use it instead of SCSADA systems. If a user hasn’t got SCADA system yet, it is recommended to use VNC technology. It is easy to work at Segnetics PLCs, because they have colorful display and broadcast colorful image on PC monitor.

There are 4 steps to use VNC on Segnetics PLCs

Be sure plc is connected to wi-fi or Ethernet.
Install a program on PLC, click here to download it.
Download and install any VNC viewer. When you research online, you’ll see a number of programs that are fee-paying or cost-free. All of them use the same protocole, so you can use any of the programs. Install it on a device (a PC, a tablet PC or a smartphone) that will operate this plc.
Open the VNC viewer and write down IP address of the PLC in a relevant field. That is how you connect the PLC to a PC.

That’s all. Remote PC connects your PLC to PC: the controller is broadcasting information to PC and you can operate the controller.
